Useful Tips
Here’s 10 Chiang Mai travel tips to help make the best of your travel here:
1. Keep healthy. Ensure you get all relevant vaccinations before travelling, and be wary of dehydration in the Thailand heat, especially if you are partying the nights away (see below).
2. Nightlife revolves around the famous Night Bazaar on Loi Kroh Road, where there’s a lot of fine restaurants offering various kinds of food. Another blooming chic nightlife location is Nimmanhemin Road.
3. Respect local customs, especially in temples (such as removing shoes and wearing adequate clothing). Some places, like the Ordinary Hall in every temple of Northern Thailand, are forbidden for women to enter.
4. Brush up on your negotiating skills. Bargaining at the markets is not just a game here, it is part of life. Keep a smile on your face though and bring plenty of low denomination notes.
5. To get around Chiang Mai City, you could hire ‘Rod Deang’ or Red Truck that could take you around the city, sometime outside. But, be careful about the price and do not forget to bargain, as normally the driver will ask you to pay too much. The price is dependent on the length and time.
6. Be aware of Jem scams. The general rule is that if it's too good to be true, it most likely is. But silverware is really good for souvenirs from Chiang Mai, as they are good quality and style.
7. Northern Thai food is quite interesting. A must try meal for any tourist is Khan Tok Dinner, the authentic cuisine complemented with a cultural performance will show you the traditional Northern Thai way of life from times gone by.
8. You can find local food at the fresh market such as Pratu Chiang Mai or Sompet Martket inside the moat, and Ton Payom Market to the west of the city.
9. If you rent a car or motorcycle, even bicycle, do not follow a Red Truck, as they will stop or break at any unexpected point. And always wear a helmet.
10. Learn some Thai words such as Sawasdee, or Kob Khun.
