Yee Peng - Loy Krathong

19/11/2010 - 21/11/2010
Place: Maeping Riverside

Loykrathong occurs throughout Thailand on the fullmoon night of the twelth month (~ Nov - Dec). This festival will show you the long-life tradition of more than 600 years since Sukhothai period.

The meaning of Loykrathong is to apologise to the guardian angel of water or "Pra Mae Kongka" and say thank you to her because we use and drink water everyday. It is only once in a year that we will do this.People will make each Krathong - made of banana tree and decorated with flowers and banana leaves, with an incense stick and candle in the middle. Also someones hair is cut and nailed to the Krathong, then float it on the river. They belive that action will take the  bad luck away.

Yee Peng
is a festival on the same period with Loy Krathong, but there are some different meanings and actions.

Northern Thai people launch hot air balloons made from rice paper into the sky in the fullmoon night of Yee (2nd) Month. Yee means the second, Peng means fullmoon, and in Northern Thailand, they will count the month faster than other places for 2 months. So, Yee (2nd) month for Northern Thai people will be around Nov or Dec of each year.

The hot air balloons that people will make will be launched to enshrine the Buddha Relics in heaven. Buddhists believe that there is a Chedi call "Ketkeawchulamanee" that keeps the Lord buddha relics inside.
